Book Review: FuryBorn

March 26, 2019

Book review of Furyborn by Claire Legrand ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why I chose to read it

I’ve seen this one all over #Bookstagram, I mean ALL over. I hadn’t even heard of it before I started my new instagram and focusing it on books and food. So I saw it everywhere and saw all the reviews and knew I had to read it. Now that I have 4 library cards (because I like to cheat the system) I was able to put it on one of them and forget about it until it popped up!

What I liked

I really liked the unsurety of whether Rielle was good or bad. Since the book opened up with something very dramatic and then bounces back and forth before they cross over and make some sense. I appreciated the similarity to other YA books but this one is definitely more New Adult than YA. There are some more adultish scenes in the book that I enjoyed since it made it just a little less teen friendly. I enjoyed the action and the moral ambiguity.

What I liked least

About 1/2 of the way through I was a bit over the back and forth, I wanted to know what the cross over was. It seemed like it could have gotten to the point much sooner. I also think maybe I am just in need of a break from the princess/queen who doesn’t know she is a queen storyline already. I also just didn’t like Eliana. She was stubborn and annoying about many of the things going on.

Would I recommend it?

Yes. I would. I still found it to be slightly different than the other YA books floating around. I enjoyed the action and the way the world was built up, leaving space for another book. I would definitely say don’t let the conflicting reviews on goodreads determine if you read the book or not because we are all different and see things differently. I wouldn’t say it is the best fantasy book out there but I am ready to read the next book!

Have you read this book? What did you think?

Down the TBR Hole: March

March 20, 2019

Found this idea through Bookishly Brittany who followed Lost in a Story.

Here is how it works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

So here we go….

GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso

I am pretty sure someone recommended this to me. It is the first book on my goodreads and has been on my TBR since 2015. Going back and reading the synopsis it just doesn’t call to me at this point in my life.

Judgement: Go

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

Reading the synopsis now the book sounds incredibly sad. I am not sure how I found this book or if it was recommended. It has such great reviews too. I do want to read it, now that I am seeing it again I want to find a time to read it when I am emotionally ready.

Judgement: Keep

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton

By now I have figured out where a lot of these books came from by seeing which of my goodreads friends have reviewed them. I read the synopsis and can’t seem to find one good reason why I wanted to read it.

Judgement: Go

Darla’s Story by Mike Mullin

This was one of those novellas in between two books in a series that is supposed to help you understand a character better. I probably put it on my TBR because I was reading the series but then when I finished I had zero interest in reading it.

Judgement: Go

Ashfall by Denise A. Agnew

I have a feeling I added this because it was similar to something I was reading at the time and it got lost in the forever growing TBR list. Looking back at the synopsis I do actually want to read it!

Judgement: Keep

I hope to do some more of these to help get through my TBR. I think in the next I might also do some of my Kindle Books because I have over 1000 on there!

High Five on Friday: Cooking

March 15, 2019

Linking up for High Five on Friday and I thought I would 5 of my favorite foods we have cooked recently!

Panang Curry & Jasmine Rice

I love a good curry and if you leave it up to me we would eat some variations of asian food every night but AJS is not as big a fan as me. They are so easy because I pick up the curry base at Hmart and a can of coconut milk, add veggies and chicken and just let it cook!

Cauliflower Rice Stuffed Avocados

The night before I made cauliflower rice stir fry and we had leftovers. AJS mixed the leftovers with ground chicken and stuffed avocados. He put some pineapple salsa on the side w/ground chicken and that was our meal!

Stuffed Burgers

This was one of those weeks we were trying to cut carbs so we had burgers stuffed with vegan cheese and a tomato & cucumber salad with chipotle mayo on it.

Tomato Basil Chicken & Veggies w/Quinoa

I loosely followed a tomato basil recipe I found online sautéing chicken, veggies, basil and cherry tomatoes and serving it over quinoa. It was quick and delicious!

Southwestern Vegan Mac & Cheese

Sorry for the not so great photo but I think I was super hungry that day. I’m lactose intolerant and I miss mac & cheese so much. I mixed up a box of Daiya mac & cheese with some green & red pepper and some andouille sausage and put a whole bunch of spices into it. Another quick and delicious meal!

So there you have it! 5 meals we have had lately that were delicious and not incredibly time consuming! I’m happy to share more detailed recipes if anyone wants them!
