Meetup: Starting a Group!

January 28, 2019

I wanted to share with you guys a bit about the meetup group I started when I was in Chicago!

 A little background

So let me explain why I started a group instead of just attending meetups from other groups. When I first got back to Chicago there were some really great groups but they were HUGE. Like 1000+ people in them. Eventually I started to notice that the groups were all posting the same events(cross posting) and they were events like “Singles party” “Networking Blah Blah” and they were for 150 guests, coed, or for dating. Even in the group that was specifically for Couples making friends. It made no sense. So I decided that I wanted to start a group of my own and hope for the best.

 The basics

I named the group: “Let’s Make Real Friends” and I put this little blurb in the about section:

  • “It is so hard to make close friends as an adult! There are many groups out there for girlfriends but it still seems to be so hard to make real genuine friendships that last past a meetup with 30+ people. You don’t have to look a certain way, make a specific amount of money or live in a certain neighborhood to make friends and that is what this group is for! We will be geared towards women in their 20’s & 30’s, single, in a relationship and/or married, who like to explore this great city and make new friends! This group is about small meetups and making real lasting friendships. Meetups will be 10 people or less always”

I started the group in September 2017 and it really didn’t pick up until about January. We now have 260 members and I get requests to join daily.  We have great turn out now with a wait list for every event.

 The Good
  • The good is that I have met some really awesome women! I always have people to do something with. If I see something I want to do or a place I want to try I just make a meetup and there is always at least 1 other girl out there who wants to go.
  • Once the group started to really grow people started giving me ideas and offering to host events.
All the events on the calendar for May already!
The Bad
  • People are flakey. Especially people you meet online. Living in a city like Chicago means there are a lot of options for every day of the week and we live in a time where having options makes people a lot less willing to commit.
  • It also takes work. Until people are open to hosting events on their own you are the host for everything. You have to come up with ideas, make the time and keep the group going.

To combat some of this bad…I had to make rules. I had an event in December with a full RSVP list and 10 people on the waitlist. By the time the event started everyone already on the list had cancelled and the waitlist was moved up…which  means no one showed up.  Let me tell you how upset I was that I traveled across the city in the cold to wait outside for 20 minutes before I realized no one was coming. Going into the new year, with the help of a couple girls in the group, I came up with some rules:

  1. No shows are automatically booted from the group
  2. People have to change their RSVP 3 hours ahead of time or receive a warning (2x and they are out)
  3.  Anyone on the waitlist is responsible for attending if their name gets moved up (people rsvp on the waitlist and forget)

Seems kind of ridiculous right? But the point is really that we should be treating each other as we would a real friend.  You wouldn’t leave a friend at a restaurant waiting for you and not show or cancel right? Then we shouldn’t do it to strangers either.

So thats the story of the meetup group and how I get to do all the fun stuff I do around Chicago all the time! I am open to answering any questions or helping out if anyone is thinking of making their own group!

Why Hello There…

January 7, 2019

Allow me to reintroduce myself…my name is…

ok ok enough Jay-z for the moment.

Now that we are in a new year and over the past month I have been tweaking and changing my blog up, putting it out there hoping to get back into the community again I have some new visitors. I thought it would be fun to reintroduce myself.

The Blog

I started this blog in 2011. It was something I had thought of a lot and finally made happen. I ended up moving abroad shortly after and you can find some of my posts from living abroad here. Forgive if some of them are a mess. I am currently working on cleaning up old posts.

It has always been an amalgamation of all things related to my life. My love of food, travel, friends/family and my rants/raves, rambles and full on B***h fests. (working on cursing less). I’ve decided to kind of keep it that way but also really focus on my favorite things (Food, Travel, Exploring, Being Social and Reading!)

About Me

I am..A Perpetual Student. I love learning and as much as my ever growing student loan debt grows I will continue until I get my PhD.

A book lover. I read far more than any other thing I do other than work. I can sit and read just about anywhere and I do all the time.

A Foodie. I love food. I love finding new foods and trying new spices. I don’t just look at food like something we need. I enjoy it.

A Procrastinator. This is so real, I leave everything to the last minute. Even when I plan it I will still manage to leave it until it needs to be done. (Eyeing my laundry that I should have done at any point over the two weeks of break instead waited until I was back to work)

I start things and never finish them. It’s bad! I have the best of intentions.

I am a super social person who also loves to be around people even just to sit alone and read.

I love hot weather. The hotter the better. When we moved to Austin the first month was all 100+ weather and while everyone was complaining I was riding around windows down, sweating and loving every minute.

I’m in my 30’s and with that has come the wonderful aspect of giving a lot less s**ts what people think of me, how I dress, what I do for a living, how I look…pretty much any of the things that people judge.

I don’t like to define myself by my career choice. When I meet people I do my best to talk about everything but our jobs even though it is usually the 2nd question that people will ask when they meet someone new. Let’s just say I get a winter/summer break and I work with 500+ germ factories that vary in age.

OOh and I have curly hair…and I love cocktails! Especially the kind with Whiskey in them!

So if you are new around here, Welcome! If you have been around for awhile then Thank you! I look forward to another great year of blogging and following along with your lives!

2019 is Here!!

January 2, 2019

I hope that you all had a fantastic NYE and relaxing New Year’s Day! Here we are on the 2nd day of 2019 and I am so excited to share some of my goals.

First, as I mentioned on Monday. I don’t use the word resolution. It always sets me up for failure so I prefer to have an overall Goal for the year and to make smaller, more attainable goals throughout the year.

Healthy

This word has some really negative things that can go with it. I am not focusing on losing weight and I am NOT looking at a scale at all this year. I am fighting the negativity of feeling like I need to look a certain way or listening to the constant negativity about bodies prevalent in social media and the blogging world. I dealt with some health issues in 2018 and so for 2019 my health is important. That means taking better care of my body in all ways including eating better foods, exercising, taking care of my mental health and working on negative feelings/talk of myself and feeling confident in being able to splurge when I feel like it.

Happy

This is always my goal for the year. I want to do what makes me happy in whatever way that comes. I’ve wanted to move out of Chicago for a few years now and I made that leap in 2018, that made me happy even if it took a lot of hard work and some bumps along the way. So for 2019 I want to make decisions that work towards my smaller goals and that constantly work towards this word. Sometimes though, I might have to do things that suck knowing that the outcome is Happy. Does that makes sense?

The Big Picture

With all that said. I have had a few things on my 5 year plan that are getting damn close…damn you 30’s for moving so quickly! In order to get working on those I will have to make sure that my monthly goals help me get there! I need to work on saving, as much as I would love to see the world I want to see more of the US too and also becoming more politically and culturally “conscious” is big on my radar this year.

My January 2019 Goals!

Spending. I need to work on my this in order to get started on those goals! so for January I am doing my own version of “No Spend” which includes no starbucks, shopping for anything not necessary(i.e. toothpaste but I already have that), taking a large chunk of my pay and putting it away immediately, and sticking to my “social” allowance for the month.

Cooking. I fell off of the cooking the last 6 months, which is weird because I actually love to cook. I/we plan to cook at least 4-5 meals a week and I will eat the leftovers! (This is a big deal I am not a leftovers person) Plus I have 3 new cookbooks that I would love to start using!!

I can’t even tell you how excited I am about this!

Planning. I am so bad at this guys. So bad. But I am so excited to use my Erin Condren Teacher Planner to get started on all the great things I want for 2019. Plus, as I mentioned I need to get started working on these long term plans! This is also going to help with the Spending & Cooking!

Being Present. I set this goal in December because I realized how often I was browsing Instagram, checking my stats and focusing so hard on fixing things on the blog that I forgot to be present. If I am actually doing the Planning part of January I will not need to spend as much time on my phone/laptop and more time enjoying what I am doing! I want to be able to put down my phone and sit with AJS even if we are just watching TV.

So to recap….we have Healthy & Happy as my overall 2019 Goals! January is going to be about Planning so that I can stop Spending, Cook more, and Be Present in the moment!

Do you make resolutions or goals? Are you a big picture or smaller goals type person? What do you want for 2019?
