Down the TBR Rabbit Hole

May 16, 2019

Found this idea through Bookishly Brittany who followed Lost in a Story.

The Girl In the Maze by R.K. Jackson

A psychological thriller for fans of Gillian Flynn and Tana French. I like them, which is probably why I put this on my tbr. The reviews are not so great and in reading the synopsis I see something about hearing voices and doubting her sanity. I’m not sure I would enjoy that as much as just your regular crazy killer. Judgement: Go

Trouble by Kate Christensen

I’ve heard great things about Kate Christensen so I think that may be how this book came to be on my TBR but reading the synopsis I immediately thought “Ugh” so yea it’s a go. Judgement: Go

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald

“Once you let a book into your life, the most unexpected things can happen…” This has an interesting concept and I love books that have bookshops in them! Judgement: Keep

The Dragon’s Path by Daniel Abraham

A couple years ago I went through a phase where I was reading a lot of fantasy so I added lots of books and series to my TBR. I realized I probably shouldn’t add the whole series before reading the first book though so I did remove the other 4 books in this series but I still love a good fantasy! Judgement: Keep

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Another fantasy added around the same time so. I also removed the rest of the series (there were 6 more) from my TBR although this one definitely looks like something I want to read. A band of thieves. Yes please. Judgement: Keep

I think it is so interesting the way our reading tastes change over the years. I am sure when I added a lot of the books on my list I was probably reading really similar books at the time but I hope to be more deliberate with adding them and actually reading the summaries.

Have you read any of these? Think I should keep or drop one?

Show us Your Books & Books Goals Update: May

May 14, 2019

It’s that time again! Linking up with Jana Says & Life According to Steph for Show us your Books!

______________________________________________________________________________

But first I want to share my Book Goals update for May!

  • 4/25: Books I didn’t choose for myself
  • 4/12: Non-Fiction Books
  • Posted 6 bookish photos on Instagram & 4 Bookish blog posts
  • #Unreadshelfproject2019 – I read the book right away so I am 1/4 of actually reading the book I chose.

Now let’s talk about what I read in April…..

I had a ridiculous reading month. I think it made up for January-March where I was struggling to get books read. I read 16 books in April.

Check out my GoodReads and add me so I can see what you are reading!

Born a Crime ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’ve seen some mixed reviews for this book but I really enjoyed it. I kind of wish that I had listened to the Audiobook but I try to keep really light reads to audio. I really enjoyed learning his history and it definitely led to me googling things about Apartheid and South Africa that I did not know about. I love when a book makes me google for more information. I hope that he comes out with another book that tells more about his journey in Comedy. I laughed, I cried. It was good.

Eligible ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I have to tell you guys. The only Jane Austen book I have read is Pride & Prejudice and I don’t recall loving it all that much. I know, I know. That being said, I enjoyed this book. I love modern re-tellings of stories because its fun to see modern versions. The sisters. Oh the sisters were all so annoying. I wanted to slap the youngest of the them but then it was so realistic. We all know someone like that.

Nevermoor ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is only the 2nd book I have given 5 stars to in the last 4 months. I know people said it felt like HP and all that but I didn’t think so. I think they built the world and I wanted to know what happened. I liked the characters, I found myself picturing them in my head and I was super frustrated when I found out the 2nd book has like a million holds in the library. I thought this might be too young for me which is why it took me forever to get to it but I think it was just right.

Year One ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed this book. I love a good Dystopian book and I appreciate that there multiple story lines that converge. I think maybe some parts might have been a bit cookie cutter but at some point there will be overlap if you read a lot of the same kinds of books. I am excited to read the next book in the series.

The Disasters ⭐⭐⭐ .75 This was definitely a YA book. I know that seems weird since it is one but there are plenty of YA books that you can read as adult and not feel like you read a middle grade book. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I think that while they were trying to make the LGBT and diversity seem so common place it actually ended up seeming forced to me.

Books Reviewed on IG

  • Fight or Flight ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2. You can find the post here!
  • My Lovely Wife ⭐⭐⭐⭐ You can find the post here!
  • Mrs. Kimble ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 This was my April #unreadshelfproject2019 book (the newest book to your unreadshelf). You can find the post here!
  • Make Me Bad ⭐⭐⭐ & Ruthless King Series ⭐⭐⭐⭐ You can find the post here!

Books that Deserve their own review

  • On the Come Up – ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I feel like I would not do this book justice giving a short review so look for a full one coming soon!
  • Beautiful Creatures – ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2 (right now) I am still trying to decide how I feel about this book so I am going give it a separate review.

I know that was a lot to read, thanks for hanging in there! Have you read any of these? I look forward to seeing what you all read in April!

Down the TBR Rabbit Hole

April 16, 2019

Found this idea through Bookishly Brittany who followed Lost in a Story.

You can see March’s picks here!

Here is how it works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

So here we go….

The Bookshop on the Corner by Rebecca Raisin

This looks like an adorable romance, not sure why I haven’t read it yet but I also love books about bookshops! Judgement: Keep

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

It looks like a light YA read, but also a bit on the childish side. I love vampire everything but also the reviews seem to claim this is a great read. Judgement: Keep

The Passage by Justin Cronin

This book comes in at 766 pages which is likely why I haven’t gotten to it yet. Post Apocalyptic, fantasy and paranormal and the first of 3 books. Judgement: Keep

The Fever by Megan Abbott

In reading this review I am not really sure why I put this book on my list. It is very likely that I found this on a list. A mysterious illness strikes a high school? Meh. Judgement: Go

The Passenger by Lisa Lutz

Looking at this now I am almost positive I added this book because I thought it was another book that was about aliens. Judgement: Go

Keeping 3 and removing 2 at this rate I will still have 800+ books on my good reads list when I finally get through this!

Have you read any of these? Think I should keep or drop one?
